Digital India Expansion: ₹14,903 Crore Allocated

The Digital India program will be expanded and given a five-year extension by the Union Cabinet on August 16. This will include growing the Computer Emergency Response Team, India (CERT-in). The 2015 program’s expansion will cost 14,903 crore, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of electronics and information technology.

This is a five-year outlay that will run from 2021–2022 through 2025–2026, according to Mr. Vaishnaw. According to officials, this expenditure would exceed the funding that has already been allocated to the program during the past two years. “Small businesses, schools, and hospitals require cybersecurity technologies so they can concentrate on their work. According to him, cybersecurity should be easily available, inexpensive, and economical. In accordance with the policy, 2.65 lakh workers will obtain information security training, while 6.25 lakh IT experts would receive up- and re-skilling training.

Additionally, the National Knowledge Network (NKN), a high-speed broadband network created in 2010 to enhance connectivity among educational and research institutions, would be upgraded and modernized using these monies. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, 540 additional services will be added to the Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) platform, which currently provides access to around 1,700 government services.

Verification of documents for MSMEs

MSMEs will now be able to access the government’s online repository for official documents, DigiLocker, through this expansion. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, this will make it simpler for them to obtain certified documents for business loans. He added that this will result in a separate application because company and individual verification procedures differ.

Nine more supercomputers will be added to the National Supercomputing Mission’s fleet of 18, which already has 18. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, there will be several uses for these supercomputers in the fields of geology, agriculture, and artificial intelligence (AI) modeling.  All 22 of the languages listed in Schedule 8 of the Constitution will be available with the release of Bhashini, the AI-enabled translation tool developed with the assistance of Microsoft and OpenAI.
