Jim Breheny, a spokesperson from the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Zoos and Aquarium, which oversees the well-being of animals in several zoos and an aquarium across the city, reassured everyone that Sally was being carefully watched and that her safety was a top priority.
As the day progressed, the floodwaters receded, and by 3 p.m., the zoo had returned to normal. All the animals were back in their enclosures, safe and sound. Fortunately, none of the dedicated zoo staff were at risk during the storm. In a precautionary measure, all four of the city’s zoos had been temporarily closed to the public to ensure the safety of the animals and staff alike.
For Karen Dugan and her colleagues at the city’s parks department, the unexpected sight of a wandering sea lion was a rare and thrilling experience. Their third-floor offices in the Arsenal building inside the park provided a unique vantage point overlooking the zoo.
